Community Presence is valued within all Residency programs at Authority Health. Recently, several of the Family Medicine residents were able to interact with young adults at the Greg Kesler Basketball Camp by talking to them about a potential career in Medicine.
The Authority Health Family Medicine residency is a three-year postdoctoral training program based in Metropolitan Detroit. This residency program is uniquely positioned to provide the full range of primary care training in a variety of practice settings, emphasizing urban and rural communities that are medically underserved. Ambulatory care and comprehensive family medical services are stressed, and significant time will be spent at Detroit-area federally qualified health centers, community clinics, and private practice offices interacting with patients, their families, and medical staff. The inpatient components of training take place at affiliated hospitals in the Detroit area, and each resident is afforded the opportunity to further extend his/her skills and knowledge to all areas of primary care through elective rotations. The primary goal of this program is to prepare board-certified osteopathic family physicians who practice the full scope of patient-centered, evidence-based primary health care, to help meet the growing demand for primary care providers in Michigan.
The Family Medicine Program has a very active Journal Club meeting twice monthly discussing pertinent journal articles. We also go through a textbook every two years, chapter by chapter to its completion. The residents provide several questions per chapter and discussion points which together create a helpful future reference for Boards. We will also include additional readings from other selected texts in Pediatrics, Dermatology, and Primary Orthopedics as they pertain to Family Medicine.
The program is also involved with our OPTI, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) Statewide Campus System, for 36 academic days that are completed one academic day per month in various topics ranging from cardiology and colposcopy to office management and medical ethics. Additional modules from the Statewide Campus System are available to the residents online; for example in sleep medicine. Also, a course in Osteopathic Medicine Principles is taught in conjunction with Detroit Wayne County Health Authority and the Michigan State University COM faculty in osteopathic medicine. In addition to the Statewide Campus Days, the Family Practice Residency also will have additional academic programs of two to four hours per month in topics that are pertinent to family medicine that do not duplicate but enhance those covered by the Statewide Campus.

Marjan Moghaddam, DO, is the Program Director for the Authority
Health Family Medicine Program. Dr. Moghaddam is also Medical Director of Partners in Wellness at the McKenny Center in Detroit. Dr. Moghaddam studied at Wayne State for her undergraduate career, and completed medical school at MSUCOM. Dr. Moghaddam completed her residency at Garden City Hospital. She is board certified by the ABOFP, as well as a clinical associate professor at MSUCOM. Member of the AOA, ABOFP, and AAFP.
Richard Bryce, DO, is the Clinical Educational Consultant of the 
Authority Health Family Medicine Program. Dr. Bryce is a member of the Family Medicine clinical faculty at Henry Ford Health System, and is a family practitioner at Community Health and Social Services (CHASS), a Federally Qualified Health Center, both in Detroit. Dr. Bryce is also assistant professor at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

A typical first-year resident schedule includes:
- 2 blocks: internal medicine completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
- 1 block: family medicine completed at the resident’s FQHC continuity clinic site
- 1 block: newborn nursery completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
- 1 block: sports medicine completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
- 1 block: obstetrics completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
- 1 block: emergency medicine completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
- 1 block: general surgery completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
- 1 block: critical care completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
- 1 block: pediatrics completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
- 1 block: behavioral medicine completed at one of our affiliated community behavioral health centers
- 1 block: geriatrics completed at one of our affiliated hospitals
