DETROIT — John Sealey, D.O, director of Medical Education for the Authority Health Graduate Medical Education Program, has been accepted into the 2014-15 Health Policy Fellowship, sponsored by the American Osteopathic Association.
The fellowship program, which is cosponsored by the New York Institute of Technology/New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, offers the fellowship to 12 physicians and other health professionals practicing or teaching osteopathic physicians and preparing for leadership roles in the profession and positions of influence in health policy.
Fellows attend an intensive five-day academic orientation before beginning a series of nine, three-day weekend seminars in various cities throughout the country. The curriculum in health policy offers a broad range of analytic and communication skills to apply to health policy, and includes coursework in federal and state health policy, uninsured and vulnerable populations, the health care workforce, quality of care and patient safety, economics of health policy, rural health, multicultural medicine, and medical education.
“I’ve always had a desire to be in health management,” Dr. Sealey said. “I’ve been medical director of a hospital, chief of surgery, and now director of medical education. This fellowship will provide me additional skills to influence health policy, which will enhance my work in training medical residents.”
Dr. Sealey received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. he completed his general surgery residency at Michigan Hospital and Medical Center and his cardiothoracic and vascular fellowship at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital. He completed his bachelor’s degree at North Carolina Central University. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Sealey has practiced as a thoracic and vascular surgeon in Southeastern Michigan. He is board certified through the American Board of Osteopathic Examiners and the American Board of Osteopathic Surgeons.
Dr. Sealey is also an associate professor at the Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine. He supports the school’s Detroit pipeline program, mentoring students at various ages about pursuing and advancing their medical careers.
He has been published in several medical journals and is a member of numerous medical associations, including: the American Osteopathic Association, Michigan Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and Detroit Medical Society. In addition, Dr. Sealey is a trustee for Michigan Osteopathic Association.

The Authority Health teaching health center program is funded through the federal government to train primary care physicians and dentists in medically underserved areas. It is the largest teaching health center in the nation. Its goal is to train primary care physicians in medically underserved areas with the goal of retaining as many as possible to alleviate the provider shortage in those areas.
